Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does it take you to finish a drawing?

It depends on the size of the drawing and number of subjects! The smallest drawing of a single pup (4”x4”) takes about 2-3 hours. The biggest and most complex piece I’ve done was this 18”x24” drawing of a pup with two (human) children, which took approximately 30 hours of work in total.

The turnaround time from commissioning to delivery generally takes between 2-4 weeks.

Do you start your drawings with a line sketch first?

Not at all. Every drawing starts with a single dot (that’s actually the tagline of doggydots :D), meaning I don’t draft at all. I love working on the overall image first then work into smaller details. I will share some time-lapse videos in the future so you get to see me in action!

What pen do you use?

Sakura Pigma Micron. Always. My favorite size is the 02.

Do you only draw in black dots?

Yes, black dots only. Just as some people enjoy black and white photography, I personally think black dots on white or any plain-colored paper is timeless, and create the most depth in the portrait. I also feel that black and white most draws the attention to the subject. In my opinion, dotting is also the most versatile drawing technique/method, dots can create lines, shades, shapes and depicts details very well. I love seeing the image emerge as I am dotting.

How does commissioning work?

To start, I ask the humans to send some of their favorite photos and videos of the dog so that I can learn about the dog’s personality, after which we decide together on the best reference photo to represent the dog. I’d like to see the drawings as a collaborative effort between myself and the human/client.

How much does a doggydots drawing cost?

The smallest drawing of one pup costs $180, and prices are based on the size of the drawing and the number of subjects. I send my clients a detailed pricing and general information sheet at the beginning of our conversation about the portrait so that they know exactly what to expect.

Do you draw other pets?

Yes! After years of contemplating, I will be dotting my first cat very soon! Please reach out to ask about a portrait for all varieties of furry friends :)
